I recently read Jim Stroup's book "Managing Leadership" (http://books.google.ca/books?id=sWL9knQPo2oC). Jim also runs the blog "Managing Leadership" (http://www.managingleadership.com/blog).
He has a very interesting take on leadership, which he derives in part from his military background. As I read the book, I couldn't help but draw many parallels with enforcement organizations in general, and ours in particular.
I highly recommend you pick up a copy of the book!

I read a great line from one of the authors.
"The possession of too much wealth may keep people asleep by removing the learning that comes from adversity".
Working for gov't, we're not going to run into this problem without winning a lottery first.
I agree with it but wouldn't mind experiencing it, just to give me perspective of course.

Not sure if I like that Meade put "cops" in his Second layer (of society). It hits a little too close to home for me.
